Migrating to 2.5 with jUpdate
Unfortunately there is no core upgrade path from 1.5 to 2.5 but a migration. So you should anticipate lots of manual work on installing updated plugins or even replacing the old ones with similar. There is a Joomla 1.5 component you can use to ease the pain - jUpgrade. What it does it downloads a version of Joomla 2.5, decompress it and install it. After that, it should migrate all of the data from old Joomla 1.5 to the new Joomla 2.5 installation.

Here is an article I followed for my migration
http://www.ostraining.com/blog/joomla/how-to-migrate-joomla-15-to-25/
It was smooth and I had no errors.
It migrated all my content, menus and templates - no plugins though. Keep in mind that you need to edit the template to work with Joomla 2.5 Unfortunately my template is not updated to 2.5 by developers and after trying several hours to update it it still didn't look correct. So I found a new native 2.5 template and chose it for my 2.5 site. It close to my old one and free!
